Course Summary: Monitoring the patient during sedation is of utmost importance and should not be neglected. Understanding the tools for monitoring during sedation is critical to patient safety. This course is designed to demonstrate effective tools for monitoring at all levels of sedation in a pediatric dental office. It will provide an overview of current basic vital signs monitors and identify additional options when considering advanced patient monitors. It will focus on effective tools to monitor respiration and ventilation with a comparison to oxygenation. The course will give a detailed explanation of how to effectively use capnography in a pediatric dental office and will demonstrate the use and placement of a pre-tracheal stethoscope. The course will also incorporate a discussion of the appropriate times to utilize these tools.

At the completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of having the correct equipment for sedation
  • Understand where and how this sedation equipment can be purchased

 

Rose Dodson

Rose Dodson, MSc, CEO of Sedation Resource, a company focused on the needs of dental sedation practitioners. She has over 20 years of experience in business as an effective communicator, a product developer and an equipment specialist.

Dr. Mills’ current activities center on his interest in sports related orofacial injury treatment and prevention and his involvement with the Academy for Sports Dentistry (ASD). A past president and longtime board member, he is a Fellow of the ASD and was awarded the Academy’s Lifetime Distinguished Member Award in 2015. He currently is the editor of the Newsletter of the Academy for Sports Dentistry which appears in the journal Dental Traumatology. He lectures widely on Sports Dentistry and Athletic Mouthguards and serves as a team dentist for the University of New England. 

Dr. Mills serves on the Board of Directors of the Partnership for Children’s Oral Health for the State of Maine, This is a non profit organization which strives to unite various groups and individuals across the State of Maine that work towards improving the oral health of all of the children of the state. He is also a Public Policy Advocate for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
