Care of children with special health care needs (CSHCN) is a core component of a pediatric dentist’s skill set. Drs. Nelson and De Bord will discuss treatment approaches for this population that are practical and patient centered.

The viewer will learn the following:

  • The differences between the medical and social model of disability
  • Oral health disparities encountered by people with disabilities
  • Appropriate dental care goals for CSHCN
  • Treatment approaches for CSHCN including, sensory adapted dental environments, desensitization, deferred treatment, and sedation
  • The appropriate time to provide care in the operating room
  • Care transition from an interdisciplinary perspective

Travis Nelson, DDS, MSD, MPH is a full-time Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Washington and an attending dentist at Seattle Children's Hospital. Travis received his DDS from Loma Linda University, subsequently completed a residency in Pediatric Dentistry and a Masters of Public Health degree at the University of Washington, and is a board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Jessica De Bord, DDS, MSD, MA is a board-certified pediatric dentist. She serves
as the Associate Program Director of the NYU Lutheran Pediatric Dental Residency in Yakima, WA. She practices and teaches at Children's Village, an interdisciplinary clinic for children with special needs. Dr. De Bord is a clinical director for Special Smiles, the oral health component of Special Olympics, an Affiliate Assistant Professor at the University of Washington, and chair of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Committee on Special Needs.
Dr. De Bord earned her DDS from UCLA and completed her residency at the University of Washington and Seattle Children's Hospital where she also earned an MS in Dentistry and an MA in Bioethics and Humanities.
