The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recognizes that undiagnosed and/or untreated sleep-related breathing disorders are associated with cardiovascular complications, impaired growth (including failure to thrive), learning problems, and/or behavioral problems in children. In order to reduce such complications, AAPD policy encourages healthcare professionals to routinely screen their patients for increased risk and to facilitate medical referrals when indicated. This presentation provides a comprehensive overview on the evaluation and treatment of pediatric sleep disordered breathing from a myofunctional, medical, and dental perspective.

  • Identify risk factors for sleep-related breathing disorders based on history and physical exam
  • Advise parents on the benefits of early intervention and treatment of sleep disordered breathing and myofunctional disorder
  • Discuss the risks and benefits of initial treatment options
  • Understand when a referral to a therapist, ENT, or advanced professional may be indicated

Soroush Zaghi MD is a graduate of Harvard Medical School, UCLA Otolaryngology (ENT) residency, and Stanford Sleep Surgery Fellowship. He is very active in clinical research with over 60+ peer-reviewed research journal publications and is a recognized leader on advancing standards of care for sleep-related breathing disorders, myofunctional therapy, and tongue-tie surgery. He is now in practice in Los Angeles, CA as a Medical Director of The Breathe Institute, which provides comprehensive functional and structural treatment options for pediatric and adult sleep and breathing issues.
