This course provides an in-depth review of pediatric airway anatomy, respiratory physiology, pharmacology, and monitoring during sedation. Dr. Yun reviews the sedation related deaths of several pediatric patients and provides input on what went wrong and how to prevent negative sedation outcomes.

Analyze the events and possible causes that resulted in the death of children undergoing sedation in pediatric dental offices
Identify cognitive errors that can lead to sedation death
Identify practical strategies to minimize anesthesia risk and protect patient safety

Dr. Steve Yun received his M.D. from U.S.C. and completed his residency in anesthesiology at U.C.L.A. Medical Center. He is a staff member at Rady’s Children’s Hospital in San Diego and Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Orange County. He is an expert consultant for the Dental Board of California and a safety inspector for the American Association for the Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities (AAAASF).
