Although our understanding of children with special needs has advanced greatly, there are still many mistakes being made in the sedation and management of these patients.

Using actual case examples, this lecture will discuss practical techniques to help in the sedation of children with special needs and congenital syndromes.

Educational Objectives:

  • Describe simple but powerful strategies to help the practicing dentist provide safe sedation for these patients
  • Identify common mistakes made in sedating children with special needs and congenital syndromes
  • Explain the limits and boundaries of sedation for these patients, and provide guidelines as to when they should be referred to a more tertiary center for dental sedation.

The California Society of Pediatric Dentistry (CSPD) is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider Approved by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education.

ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. Concerns or complaints about a CE provider may be directed to CSPD at (916) 231-2142 or to ADA CERP at www.ada.org/cerp

Credit is awarded on an hour-for-hour basis. Each attendee should claim only those hours of credit that he or she was in actual attendance of the educational activity. Participants should retain course certificate of completion for their records.

Original Continuing Education Certificates are subject to Dental Board of California audit and should be retained by the licentiate for a period of six years. Completion of these courses does not constitute authorization for the attendee to perform any services that he or she is not legally authorized to perform based on his or her license or permit type. This course meets the Dental Board of California’s requirements for above designated units of continuing education.

Instructor Info:

Steve Yun, MD, is a board-certified anesthesiologist who specializes in office and dental anesthesia. He obtained his M.D. from the University of Southern California, and completed his post-graduate training at the UCLA Center for Health Sciences. He is a Lecturer at the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, Clinical Professor at the Western University of Health Sciences, and an Expert Consultant and Examiner for the Dental Board of California. He is also a Safety Inspector for the American Association for the Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities (AAAASF).

He has extensive clinical research experience and as a popular speaker, gives numerous lectures across the country and internationally on patient safety issues.
