This course is designed for pediatric dentists and general dentists who want to update themselves on pulp therapy for the pediatric patients. As oral health care providers, we aim at preventing and alleviating the complications of dental caries, like pulpal infection, relieving associated symptomatology and ultimately, preserving the tooth. However, specific challenges and considerations exist when managing children. Generally, pediatric patients are poor historians, sensibility testing can be unreliable and chairside cooperation may be compromised. In addition, primary and young permanent teeth have anatomical differences that mandate specific treatment strategies. The contemporary management modalities in pediatric endodontics are influenced by new understanding of the pulp healing potential, as well as recent development in pulp medicaments and clinical practice innovations.

Educational Objectives:

  • Understand the biological process of caries disease and the complex dentin-pulp responses
  • Diagnose clinically and radiographically the pulp status of primary teeth and young permanent molars
  • Determine the most recommended pulp therapy for teeth with deep carious lesions: Indirect Pulp Treatment (IPT), Stepwise Excavation, Direct Pulp Capping (DPC), Partial Pulpotomy, Pulpotomy and Pulpectomy
  • Understand the guiding principles used during assessment and removal of carious tissue
  • Understand the different pulp materials and medicaments (resin modified glass ionomer cements, formocresol, MTA, Biodentine, calcium hydroxide, and others) – description of medicament, related issues of toxicity, effectiveness, pros and cons.
  • Understand the possible effects of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) in the pulpal tissue
  • Describe each pulp therapy procedure step-by-step
  • Understand the concepts of Apexogenesis, Apexification, and Revascularization.
