Clinicians are faced daily with the challenges of diagnosing and treating defects in the dentitions. Developmental defects such as missing teeth, enamel hypoplasia and malformed teeth are relatively common and can be tremendously challenging to diagnose correctly and to select optimal treatment approaches. The explosion of information occurring in this post-genomic era has greatly advanced our understanding conditions such as affecting the teeth that can occur in isolation or as part of many diverse syndromes. Coupled with the many environmental conditions that can affect tooth formation, the clinician can have difficulty making the correct diagnosis and selecting optimal treatment approaches for managing the diverse restorative and esthetic challenges presented by these conditions. This course will provide practical information on the current diagnostic approaches for developmental defects and an understanding of how specific dental conditions can be treated to achieve optimal form, function and esthetics in even the most challenging cases. Exciting new breakthroughs in tissue engineering and building a tooth will be reviewed.
