Course Summary:
This course will provide a brief history of dental patient sedation guidelines and regulation in California. It will focus on specific State Board and regulatory changes that resulted from the loss of a sedated minor in a dental office and the legislation known as SB501. The course will provide current sedation guidance, examples of practical pediatric dental applications in teaching and private practice environments. It will include licensing and State Board updated information. The course will also highlight ongoing advocacy efforts and applicable legislative initiatives.

After attending this seminar, the participant will be able to:
  • Gain insight into the changing dental sedation regulatory landscape
  • Understand current Dental Board patient sedation guidelines
  • Current permitting process and timelines
  • Review applicable State laws
  • Local, State and Federal patient and provider sedation landscape and advocacy efforts

The California Society of Pediatric Dentistry (CSPD) is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider Approved by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education.

ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. Concerns or complaints about a CE provider may be directed to CSPD at (916) 231-2142 or to ADA CERP at www.ada.org/cerp

Credit is awarded on an hour-for-hour basis. Each attendee should claim only those hours of credit that he or she was in actual attendance of the educational activity. Participants should retain course certificate of completion for their records.

Original Continuing Education Certificates are subject to Dental Board of California audit and should be retained by the licentiate for a period of six years. Completion of these courses does not constitute authorization for the attendee to perform any services that he or she is not legally authorized to perform based on his or her license or permit type. This course meets the Dental Board of California’s requirements for above designated units of continuing education.

Instructor Info:

John Blake, DDS  is the Executive Director and Dental Director of the Children’s Dental Health Clinic (cdhc.org) in Long Beach, CA. This private non-profit program and teaching facility helps the comprehensive dental needs of underserved, special needs and medically complex patients in their (main) Long Beach and Catalina Island programs. The CDHC is a clinical training site for 4 (PY2) Pediatric Dental Residents from the U.S.C. Ostrow School of Dentistry. He also helped start the C.A.R.E. Dental program at St. Mary’s hospital. This grant funded; non-profit program is specific to patients with H.I.V. His first 12 years were spent in private practice. Dr. Blake is the president of the Living Hope Clinical Foundation, a fellow of the American College of Dentists, a part-time faculty member of the U.S.C. School of Dentistry, a member of the A.D.A council on government affairs and the 2023 president of the California Dental Association.
