Our patients and their families expect that we will be able to care for them safely. Unfortunately, suboptimal administration of anesthetic and sedative agents is the leading cause of death in dentistry. It is important for the dental team to mount an effective response to the emergencies that may occur as a result of sedation. This course will focus on preparing the dental office team for the management of sedation emergencies along with a discussion concerning prevention and early recognition of deleterious trends during all phases of phases of pediatric sedation.

Educational Objectives:

  • Able to ensure that the office has the appropriate equipment and medications necessary to manage sedation emergencies
  • Understand that intended level of sedation and actual level of sedation may differ
  • Understand the importance of an effective team response to a sedation emergency

The California Society of Pediatric Dentistry (CSPD) is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider Approved by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education.

ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. Concerns or complaints about a CE provider may be directed to CSPD at (916) 231-2142 or to ADA CERP at www.ada.org/cerp

Credit is awarded on an hour-for-hour basis. Each attendee should claim only those hours of credit that he or she was in actual attendance of the educational activity. Participants should retain course certificate of completion for their records.

Original Continuing Education Certificates are subject to Dental Board of California audit and should be retained by the licentiate for a period of six years. Completion of these courses does not constitute authorization for the attendee to perform any services that he or she is not legally authorized to perform based on his or her license or permit type. This course meets the Dental Board of California’s requirements for above designated units of continuing education.

Instructor Info:

Christine L. Quinn, D.D.S., M.S. is a full-time faculty member of the UCLA School of Dentistry and provides in-office anesthesia services as part of her faculty responsibilities. She received her D.D.S. degree from the University of Southern California School of Dentistry in 1987 and obtained her MS and training in dental anesthesiology in 1989 from the Ohio State University College of Dentistry. Dr. Quinn is currently Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology in the Division of Diagnostic and Surgical Sciences at the UCLA School of Dentistry, Coordinator of Anesthesia and Pain Control, and former Director of the Dental Anesthesiology Residency Program. She is actively involved with both didactic and clinical teaching at the predoctoral and postdoctoral levels at the UCLA School of Dentistry. Dr. Quinn is an in-office examiner for the State of California for general anesthesia. Dr. Quinn serves on the Board of Directors for the California Dental Society of Anesthesiology, American Dental Board of Anesthesiology and is a Past President of the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists. She is also a member of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. Dr. Quinn is a Diplomate of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology. Besides being actively involved in research on pain and anxiety control, Dr. Quinn has been providing hospital and office-based anesthesia services for dental patients since 1989.
