This webinar will focus on the practical aspects of sports dentistry with an emphasis on mouthguards for pediatric patients. It will explore the use of mouthguards in both transitional and permanent dentition, including considerations for patients with and without orthodontic appliances. The session aims to equip participants with actionable knowledge on selecting and fitting mouthguards to enhance patient safety and care. 

Educational Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to: 
1. Understand the various types of mouthguards and their appropriate use in pediatric patients. 
2. Identify the benefits and challenges of mouthguard use in patients with transitional and permanent dentition. 
3. Gain insight into special considerations for mouthguards in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. 
4. Learn practical tips for educating patients and parents on the importance of mouthguards in sports dentistry.

The California Society of Pediatric Dentistry (CSPD) is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider Approved by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education.

ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. Concerns or complaints about a CE provider may be directed to CSPD at (916) 231-2142 or to ADA CERP at www.ada.org/cerp

Credit is awarded on an hour-for-hour basis. Each attendee should claim only those hours of credit that he or she was in actual attendance of the educational activity. Participants should retain course certificate of completion for their records.

Original Continuing Education Certificates are subject to Dental Board of California audit and should be retained by the licentiate for a period of six years. Completion of these courses does not constitute authorization for the attendee to perform any services that he or she is not legally authorized to perform based on his or her license or permit type. This course meets the Dental Board of California’s requirements for above designated units of continuing education.

Instructor Info:

Stephen Mills, DDS is a Board Certified pediatric Dentist and practices in Scarborough, Maine. He completed his DDS Degree at the SUNY at Buffalo School of Dentistry in 1981. After three years on active duty in the US Army he obtained his certificate in Pediatric Dentistry at the Department of Pediatric Dentistry of the University of Connecticut in 1987 and achieved board certification in Pediatric Dentistry in 1995. 

Dr. Mills’ current activities center on his interest in sports related orofacial injury treatment and prevention and his involvement with the Academy for Sports Dentistry (ASD). A past president and longtime board member, he is a Fellow of the ASD and was awarded the Academy’s Lifetime Distinguished Member Award in 2015. He currently is the editor of the Newsletter of the Academy for Sports Dentistry which appears in the journal Dental Traumatology. He lectures widely on Sports Dentistry and Athletic Mouthguards and serves as a team dentist for the University of New England. 

Dr. Mills serves on the Board of Directors of the Partnership for Children’s Oral Health for the State of Maine, This is a non profit organization which strives to unite various groups and individuals across the State of Maine that work towards improving the oral health of all of the children of the state. He is also a Public Policy Advocate for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. 

Dr Mills was inducted into the International College of Dentists in 2016. He is a dual member of the International Association of Dental Traumatology as well as the ASD. He writes, and lectures widely on sports dentistry both in the USA and abroad. He also acts as a volunteer dentist when needed for the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committees oral health and mouthguard activities.
