This series, consisting of three 1.5-hour webinars, aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of ankyloglossia. With contributions from esteemed experts in pediatric dentistry, pediatrics, and lactation consulting, this course will empower participants to approach ankyloglossia consultation, evaluation, referral and treatment with confidence and expertise.

Webinar 1 Title: Session 1: Ankyloglossia: Tying it to the Medical Home

  • Understand the position of the American Academy of Pediatrics on the issues of diagnosis and treatment of ankyloglossia.
  • Discuss the importance of working with the pediatric provider as well as lactation specialists in the medical home

The California Society of Pediatric Dentistry (CSPD) is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider Approved by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education.

ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. Concerns or complaints about a CE provider may be directed to CSPD at (916) 231-2142 or to ADA CERP at www.ada.org/cerp

Credit is awarded on an hour-for-hour basis. Each attendee should claim only those hours of credit that he or she was in actual attendance of the educational activity. Participants should retain course certificate of completion for their records.

Original Continuing Education Certificates are subject to Dental Board of California audit and should be retained by the licentiate for a period of six years. Completion of these courses does not constitute authorization for the attendee to perform any services that he or she is not legally authorized to perform based on his or her license or permit type. This course meets the Dental Board of California’s requirements for above designated units of continuing education.

Instructor Info:

Dr. Maya Bunik is a Professor of Pediatrics at University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine and medical director of primary care at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Dr. Bunik received her medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School, Minneapolis in 1988. She completed a residency, including a chief residency, in pediatrics at the University of Colorado Denver and The Children’s Hospital in 1992. She was Clinical Assistant Professor UCSF working at Children’s Hospital in Oakland for over 10 years. She returned to Colorado to complete the primary care research fellowship at the University of Colorado Denver including MPSH 2003-2005. Maya has published studies on quality improvement with outpatient asthma, developmental screening, second hand smoke and breastfeeding support in low-income Latinas. Her work on combination feeding in Latinas ‘los dos’ was cited in the Surgeon General’s Call to Action on Breastfeeding, January 2011. Her book, Breastfeeding Telephone Triage and Advice, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics, is now in its second edition and was distributed to US hospitals as part of the WHO Baby Friendly Health Initiative. The Trifecta Approach combining medical provider, lactation consultant and psychologist as holistic model for breastfeeding evaluation was published in Journal of Human Lactation and has been well-received as an innovation.

 

Dr. Jenny Thomas is a pediatrician and breastfeeding medicine specialist at in Franklin, Wisconsin and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Community and Family Medicine and Pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). She received her MD from MCW in 1993, and her MPH in 2011. She has been an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) since 2003. She is now serving on the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Section on Breastfeeding Executive Board after spending several years as the Chief of the Chapter Breastfeeding Coordinators.  She recently stepped down after 6 years on the Executive Board of the Wisconsin Chapter of the AAP.  She is a founder and an Immediate-past Chairperson of the Wisconsin Breastfeeding Coalition. She is the author  of  “Dr. Jen’s Guide to Breastfeeding.”  She has received national awards for teaching,  advocacy for children, and innovation with in her practice and community.  She is one of only a few physicians internationally to be recognized as a Fellow of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (FABM) for her expertise on breastfeeding. Dr. Thomas’ interests and research have focused on issues related to the use of social media to support breastfeeding mothers.
