Course Description: Approximately 24 million Americans, nearly 10% of the population, have what is considered a severe disability. This presentation will begin with an overview of the current state of oral health for people with disabilities and the many challenges and barriers to care. Then, a new approach to addressing those barriers will be discussed with a focus on a patient-centered philosophy of care. Working with community partners the goal is to reduce the dependence on episodic urgent care. This approach, housed in facilities designed specifically for special care dentistry, is aimed to create a long-term dental home for all patients. This is achieved, in the short term, through providing comprehensive, multi-disciplinary and interprofessional ongoing care. In the long-term enhanced access to care is achieved by using these centers to train more providers who are not only competent but also comfortable delivering oral health care to people with disabilities.
