Lenhart – Oral Sedation for Children and Adults Part 3




Part 3 of a four part sedation course is intended for pediatric dentists and general dentists who have had training in sedation during their graduate or residency training programs and intend to renew their sedation permits. The course will review sedation techniques, patient selection, and pharmacology of commonly used sedatives, management of sedition emergencies, and other related topics.

Educational Objectives:

  • Discuss the basic principles and guidelines of oral sedation
  • Review the basic concepts of Pediatric physiology and anatomy of the cardiovascular, respiratory and gastrointestinal systems
  • Describe the differences between the pediatric airway and adult airway
  • Discuss physical and behavioral assessment and their impact on patient selection
  • Understand the pharmacological action and physiological effect of the commonly used oral sedatives
  • Discuss monitoring, depth of sedation assessment and discharge criteria
  • Discuss the risks and benefits of sedation and other alternatives
  • Choose the appropriate sedatives for patients according to their behavioral and dental needs
  • Identify, prevent, and manage sedation complications and emergencies

Instructor Info:

Dr. Thomas E. Lenhart, DMD, received his undergraduate degree in Microbiology at the University of California San Diego, Revelle College, 1986. He successfully completed his Doctorate in Dental Medicine at Boston University School of Dental Medicine, 1990. Dr. Lenhart completed his two year Residency Training in Anesthesiology at Loma Linda University Medical Center. Presently, he is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California San Francisco.

Completion of these courses does not constitute authorization for the attendee to perform any services that he or she is not legally authorized to perform based on his or her license or permit type. This course meets the Dental board of California’s requirements for above designated units of continuing education.
