This presentation will begin with a review of the continuum for various levels of procedural sedation used in the pediatric dental office setting. The focus will shift to identifying qualified candidates for each modality in an ambulatory setting with an emphasis on patient assessment and preparation. Considered techniques will include nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, intramuscular moderate sedation, intravascular moderate sedation, and deep sedation/ general anesthesia. A review of post-procedural patient management and discharge criteria will also be discussed. The information will then be reinforced using actual clinical scenarios, including the opportunity for attendee participation and questions.

  • Comprehend the components of pre-operative patient assessment and overall preparation
  • Compare and contrast procedural sedation options for the pediatric dental patient
  • Identify indications and contraindications for each level of office-based sedation and general anesthesia

  • Discuss post-procedure cate and discharge criteria

The California Society of Pediatric Dentistry (CSPD) is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider Approved by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education.

ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. Concerns or complaints about a CE provider may be directed to CSPD at (916) 231-2142 or to ADA CERP at www.ada.org/cerp

Credit is awarded on an hour-for-hour basis. Each attendee should claim only those hours of credit that he or she was in actual attendance of the educational activity. Participants should retain course certificate of completion for their records.

Original Continuing Education Certificates are subject to Dental Board of California audit and should be retained by the licentiate for a period of six years. Completion of these courses does not constitute authorization for the attendee to perform any services that he or she is not legally authorized to perform based on his or her license or permit type. This course meets the Dental Board of California’s requirements for above designated units of continuing education.

Instructor Info:

Jeffrey N. Brownstein, DDS, MeCSD , is the senior partner at West Valley Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, a multi-facility Pedo-Ortho group practice situated in the western suburbs of Phoenix, Arizona providing dental & orthodontic care for infants, toddlers, adolescents and adults with special healthcare needs. He is also a partner in Arizona Dental Anesthesia and Nebraska Dental Anesthesia, dental anesthesia groups providing mobile office-based care for pediatric and adult patients.

Dr. Brownstein completed his graduate dental training at the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University and his pediatric dental specialty training at the University of Florida where he served as chief resident during his final year of training. Following his pediatric residency program, Dr. Brownstein completed an extensive Craniofacial Fellowship in the dental management of Cleft Lip & Palate in the Department of Pediatric Plastic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine/St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

In 2009, after nine years of providing care in a private practice setting, Dr. Brownstein returned to the University of California at Los Angeles to further his training in the area of anesthesiology. Dr. Brownstein is board certified and a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Board of Anesthesiology and National Board of Dental Anesthesiology.
