Course summary:
The course will describe the background for enamel decalcification, the loss of tooth mineral, specifically related to orthodontic treatment. What are the reasons that the oral microbiome switches from symbiosis, a healthy stage where the majority of oral bacteria does not produce acids, to the stage of dysbiosis, a situation where the predominate bacteria can live under acid conditions and are also producing a copious amount of decalcifying acids. It will be debated how the biofilm can be influenced to switch back to the symbiosis stage. Which modifications in behavior or in diet might be successful to help with this task. It will be discussed which role fluoride and other components of oral health care products in prevention or even remineralization of the enamel play. Finally, the application of new technologies for caries prevention like lasers and bactericidal composites, potentially for bracket bonding, will be explained.
